It’s an old stereotype: women always complain about being cold and men about feeling hot.

I hear this the most when I meet with families to talk about their in home comfort choices. It’s the same in my home. Every night, I’m in shorts and a tshirt and my wife is dying of hypothermia. Thermostat is set at 71º btw.

So, what can we do?!

Well, more often than not, I grab my iPhone, tap the thermostat app and turn it up a couple degrees (while she’s looking). A few minutes later (wife not looking) back down to money saving degree. No getting up to the thermostat any more. I’m on my comfy couch or in bed already, it’s 2013! I have an app for that!

We do still have a thermostat on the wall (Honeywell Prestige) but I wonder why? I think in the near future we will just install a few (wireless) temperature sensors around the house and use apps to control the heating and air conditioning. An app on the phone, ipad, tv and oh yeah… computer. Continue reading

Humidity

It’s 65º in Cincinnati and 80% humidity outside according to my sensor. Yet I have received more than a few calls today about humidifiers! Fair enough, they were calling from conversations last week about not having enough humidity when it was cold.

You see, the average home, in the cold of winter, is recycling air through the furnace and burning the humidity out of the air. Some homes indoor relative humidity drops to 10% or less (that’s dry, like the Sahara dessert dry!). Carrier says that’s the average humidity in an un-humidified home.
